CHAMPS/Project MASCOT

Sharing just one hour per week with an at-risk child in an area elementary or middle school could benefit you and the child in ways you never imagined. Be a special friend for a child and change their life forever. Project MASCOT, a companion program to CHAMPS, will also be discussed. All mentoring sessions are held during the school day at school. Orientation sessions and sign ups for new volunteers will be held on:

  Monday, Sept. 15  from 7-8 PM, Murphree Residence Hall Common Area
  Tuesday, Sept. 16 from 8-9 PM Graham Residence Hall Gallery, or
  Wednesday, Sept. 17 from 7-8 PM at Reitz Union, Room 287

Please come to one session. Returning CHAMPS volunteers may contact us to re-register before Sept. 19, please. We must have new paperwork for each volunteer every school year.

Classroom Volunteers

Volunteer to help in the classroom at a school at any level. Teachers from across the school district send in their requests for help running centers, grading papers, or assisting in the classroom. Sign ups will be held during the times listed below.  (This process will take at least 30 minutes.)

  Thurs., Sept. 4 from 9 AM-2 PM in the Norman Hall, Terrace Room,
  Fri., Sept. 5  from 9 AM-2 PM in the Norman Hall Terrace Room,
  Mon., Sept. 8 from 9 AM-2 PM in Reitz Union, Room 361 or
  Tues., Sept. 9 from 9 AM-2 PM in Reitz Union, Room 361.

New volunteers will also need to attend an orientation session which will be held on Sept.9 from 4-5 p.m. in the J. J. Finley Elementary School Auditorium (1912 NW 5th Avenue, 5 blocks north of the stadium), or on 9/10 from 4-5 in the Reitz Union Auditorium on the second floor.
 

Afterschool Gators

Afterschool Gators work with at-risk elementary school children assisting with homework time and also helping to organize fun activities like kickball, arts and crafts, and computer time. School assignments are based on needs of the school. All volunteering occurs between 2 and 5:30 M-F. (Wednesday volunteering begins at 12:30.) Orientation times areas follows: 

  Mon., Sept.15 from 8-9 p.m., Murphree Area Common Room, Tues.,
     Sept.16 from 7-8 p.m. at Graham Area Gallery, or
  Wed., Sept. 17 from 8-9 PM in Reitz Union, room 287.

Please come to one session.
 

Rockin’ Readers

Rockin’ Readers are volunteers who spend an hour each week sharing the joy of reading and the love of books with two to three individual children between the ages of 4 and 6. Orientation and sign ups will be held on Mon., Sept. 15 from 3:30-5 p.m. or Tues., Sept.16 from 3:30-5 p.m. in the J. J. Finley Media Center.  J. J. Finley is located at 1912 NW 5th Avenue which is five blocks North of the stadium on NW 19th St.
