Enrichment teachers, Christopher Glymph, Lisa Jacobs, and Ilene Plascencia, at Norton Elementary School are using an innovative and creative method to teach math and science to their students and to introduce a unique method for incorporating Sunshine State Standards into the curriculum to prepare students for FCAT testing.  It was begun several years ago by Celia Phipps and Bunnie James with research, a visit to an elementary school in Melbourne, and a great deal of grant writing.

This hydroponics greenhouse is an innovative way to use a hands-on curriculum that integrates math and science activities for students. The focus of the project is on alternate methods of growing various crops in Florida and the economic impact of these crops. First through fifth grade students helped with construction and installation of the greenhouse and planted lettuce, herbs and other vegetables in vertically stacked containers. Students are now involved in the study of seed germination, plant growth, harvesting produce, marketing strategies, and consumer math, using basic accounting principles. They are also learning about maintaining a healthy diet through kitchen chemistry activities.

Cutting-edge technology has been incorporated into the project using Apple’s iMovie and gardening photographs on a web site made available to students, their families and the community. Students serve as mentors and work on special projects with the general school population, kindergarten buddies, pre-K handicapped buddies and other special education students.
