The Duval Fine Arts Program has transformed instruction school wide through implementation of the Whole Schools Initiative, a model of school reform through which all students receive a sequential, comprehensive education designed to improve learning both in and through the arts.  The model is supported by the creation of arts-based interdisciplinary curricula and by regular instruction in:

  • music

  • dance

  • drama
  • visual arts
  • sustained staff development

The program contains two strands:

  • Discovery Rotation Strand (grades K-3): Students will be exposed to fine arts during the school year.  These include, dance, graphic and three-dimensional arts, choral and instrumental music.  Additionally, every second and third grader will have an opportunity to participate in violin classes.

  • Specialization Strand: Fourth and Fifth graders will have the additional opportunity to choose one area in which to specialize during the entire school year.         Top

Classroom teachers will integrate the arts into their subjects and curriculum areas.  Fine arts teachers will integrate academic content into their lessons.

Success For All (SFA) Reading

C. W. Duval Elementary School, in 1996, adopted the Success For All (SFA) Reading Curriculum developed at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. Students are grouped, using the district's adopted Harcourt Basal Series, and instructed using the SFA Program.  They are also grouped based on their individualized reading level and assessed every eight weeks. Students can, after each assessment, move into different groups based on their eight-week reading assessment level.

The Success For All program includes:

  • a one-to-one tutoring program
  • a family support component
  • a social skills program.
