Littlewood Elementary School

Pre-K

HURRAY FOR PRE-K!

Pre-schoolers learn best by "doing", so Littlewood's youngest students are actively involved in all of the day's activities. A peek into our classroom reveals children singing songs, reading stories, and learning language skills. Children are painting, drawing, and cutting. Dramatic play, block play, and puzzles are popular activities. Hands-on fun includes water, sand, and playdoh play. Hands get dirty while children laugh and learn.

Our daily activities are based on weekly thematic units such as, "All about ME!", "Plants and Flowers", and "Farm Animals". Children learn basic pre-academic skills such as colors, shapes, phonological awareness, and counting through our units. These are reinforced by field trips to exciting locales, such as the Morningside Nature Center and the Santa Fe Community College Zoo. Language and social skill development are very important components of our curriculum. Independence in activities of daily living (eating, dressing, and personal hygiene) is encouraged. The classroom has two computers so the children can develop both computer skills and pre-academic skills.

Our classroom is inclusive in that children with special needs and typical children are learning and interacting side by side. The children learn from each other and learn to be understanding about individual differences.  If you are interested in our program and your child has special needs, you may contact Myra Lambert at 955-7054 for more information. Typical children are chosen at the beginning of the school year. Contact Barbara Scott for more information.
